    Photoshop Your Mobile

    Friday, December 30th, 2011

Yes the all mighty photo editing software has arrived for smart phones worldwide, although it doesn’t have a pen tool… or a clone tool or even a lasso of any sort. Mobile Photoshop is lacking to say the least but it does have colour and balance settings that someone with no web design history could use.

Mobile Photoshop has 4 categories of photo editing, the first has a: crop, straighten, rotate and flip options available. All of these modifications are controlled by the touch screen which can create a more exact result.

The next icon leads you to: exposure, saturation, tint, black and white and contrast. The intensity of these effects is controlled by dragging across the screen.

The third icon has: sketch, soft focus, sharpen and reduce noise. One problem is that reduce noise needs to be unlocked by your credit card which costs £2.99. Very similar to the previous icon, the intensity of the effect is controlled by you and how much or less you drag across the screen.

The final icon has effects and borders, there are a selection of borders and effects that can be used however they are very simplistic and some of the borders are, to put it quite boldly, plain and boring. But they can be used to change an image to black and white or even just soften up the edges.

    Conclusion

Mobile Photoshop is nothing to shout about, understandably all of the tools available on the full version of Photoshop can’t be used  on a smart phone because of the lack of buttons, mouse and so on. However this mobile version of Photoshop is a lot better than the photo editing software that has been built into iOS5, so for those who take a million and one photos on their smart phone, it is well worth having.

Why Like-Gating Should Not Be Part of Your Faceboook Marketing Mix?

    Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

I have got thousands facebook Likes.
This is nothing, I have got ten thousands Facebook likes.

And the story goes on like this. It seems people, more particularly companies have gone crazy over facebook likes and if I am not stretching the truth, it has become something of a status symbol. In fact we have become accustomed to see official facebook fanpages of leading brands are getting flooded with facebook likes. But definitely, it is not that easy. Definitely not. Business organizations are doing everything possible to get as many likes as possible and they are using a new feature – Facebook Like-gating, a lightbox that makes visitors click on the rectangular ‘thumbs up’ button if they are to see the fanpage. Now, this is double edges sword. It can help your fanpage accrues Likes for sure but at the same time, you can lose some visitors who would have otherwise visit your fanpage if there were no Like-Gating. Here we are going to take a sneak peak into the latest practices surrounding Like-Gating.

    Sky High Likes:

lately some stories started floating around how some companies managed to get huge number of Facebook likes. Take the example of Taco Bell, a California based fast-food food chain that received a whopping 250,000 Facebook likes. And what they had done. They offered a free Taco to anyone who liked their facebook fanpage. Pretty interesting but the fact is that it had cost them a lot. Now, if this does not interest you, here is another. A media tycoon, Discovery Communications, managed to pile up a jaw dropping 25 millions facebook likes within a short span. But unlike Taco Bell, they did not offer any freebie, a smart move I call it. What they put their trust on ‘Like-Gating’. They created a compelling video or something of that sort and then put that thing behind a Like-Gate. So, if you wish to see the content, you had to Like the page and everything was managed so beautifully that the number of likes soared like anything else.

Why It Cannot Be Your Cup of Tea:

It is good to have facebook likes. It shows that their love and affections for your company’s official fan page but this does not necessarily means that those who did not press the Like button are less affectionate. The fact is that people are tired of being bombarded with ads and probably this is the reason why they have bypassed it or they might have forget all about it.

Moreover, by using Like-gating, you are clearly creating a division among facebook users – those who liked you page and those who did not. Even those who did not like you page might have commented on it or might have shared the posts. But since you are barring them completely, you are simply losing on all the other options of engaging visitors who could have been converted into loyal customers.

And the disappointment. Yes if you failed to live up to the expectation, use of Like-Gating can turn out to be a complete disaster. Imagine that, you create a Like-Gating but there is nothing that can make a facebook user say Wow. Yes, they will feel cheated and if the lady luck deserts you, they can even started saying bad things about it. This is definitely not you want from your marketing mix, right? So, before you hop onto Facebook Like-Gating make sure you are hundred percent sure about it. A half hearted can ruin all your prospects.

Standing Out From The Crowd On Photoshop

    Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Certain aspects of an image need to be brought out, and this can be very difficult to do especially when there is a lot going on in the picture already. There are quite a few tools available to help you change and modify colour settings, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will help an element of an image stand out.

Curves edit input and output with the image and this can help draw attention to the image you want to grab attention. Making the image stand out a little more will require selecting the image, either by using something like the polygonal lasso tool, colour range selector or for the lazier web designers, the magic wand. Using the curve tool is more by eye as opposed to an exact “how to” guide. If you want to make an image stand out, create a curve which is closer to the top left hand corner. This will take some playing around with to get the levels just right but the time you can spend on this will range depending on how perfect you would like it.

If you really want your image to stand out as much as possible, you’re going to have to reduce the amount of attention your background receives. So again a very similar process like before, make sure all of the background is selected and the image that you are trying to draw focus to is deselected. The curve you will need to create should point close to the bottom left. Again this will take some playing around with to get just right but it depends on the kind of effect you are going for with the curves.

    Conclusion

When using Photoshop as a tool for web design, some objects may need to be brought out to help draw more attention to it and make it as a main focus. This can be very helpful with things like products and people. The situation in which curves will be used will definitely change and the approach you take as a web designer will change too.

    Photo Manipulation Tips for Photoshop

    Friday, December 9th, 2011

Manipulating images in Photoshop is useful for many reasons such as web design or just as a fun hobby, but there are some tools and methods that can be used when manipulating photo’s, for example putting two parts of an image to create one, or adding someone to an image or background. There are a lot of variations of photo manipulation and with this, there are many different tools that can be used.

    I Can Transform Ya

Using the transform tool opens up loads of options, such as warping, resizing and of course rotation. One of the first things that should be done is to resize the image that is being added because it is much easier to work with an image that I the correct size as opposed to something too small or large. Rotating an image is also just as important as resizing for the same reasons; it is much easier to work with an image which is positioned correctly. Warping an image gives it a 3D effect which stops the addition looking flat and can help it to blend in and look realistic.

    Colour Settings

There is a huge list on Photoshop of colour settings, such as hue/saturation and colour balance. When manipulating images, these settings can be used to get shades and colour levels as close as possible. This will make the images look as if they were taken in the same place and reduces the obviousness that they have been edited.

    SpongeDodge BurnPants

Sponge Dodge and Burn tools adds the finishing touches to parts of your image, if the colour is a little too intense, then the sponge tool can be used to wash and tone down the colour, the dodge tool lightens colour and the burn tool darkens it. The burn tool can be used to darken edges and to literally burn images. The dodge tool can create a flash photography effect or just to lighten up the edges to create a fading effect.

    Cloning

The clone stamp tool can be used to add the pattern or texture of one area to another, this creates a smoother effect to the image and if something has been added or taken away, then this can be used to fill in the gaps and make the image look more natural.

    Conclusion

There are quite a few different tools available for photo manipulation, each tool has its’ own purpose and they can all be used to create great effects and manipulate two images perfectly into one. It can take a lot of practice to master photo manipulation but it can be used for many different purposes which can really come in handy when it comes to web design.

    Kick Ass Colour Schemes

    Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

colour design toolChoosing the right colour scheme can be difficult and far too frequently the same boring colours are used time and time again. Color Scheme Designer is a tool in which there are different settings and a colour wheel which will help you pick out a colour scheme that is right for you and your web design project.

    Colour Scheme Pre Sets

This colour scheme has six different settings to choose colour, each with a different shape that can be customised to help you find your colours. 6 different settings are available, from left to right: mono, complement, triad, tetrad, analogic and accented analogic. Mono is the simplest of the colour schemes as the colours selected are slightly different shades of one another, whereas the triad and tetrad choose very opposite colours.

    Adjust Scheme

Along with being able to select your pre set and hue choices, you can also adjust the brightness/saturation and the contrast of your palette. There are even pre sets to the contrast and saturation settings to help you match the colour scheme with the style of website you are aiming for. Also, you can customise the settings after you have used a pre set, so you can finalize your design and make sure it reflects on your website exactly how you want it to.

    Website Preview

Color Scheme Designer has a tab where it will show you what your colours would look like on a website, in either a lark or a dark theme. The dark theme uses all of your colours to piece together the website, but the light theme will use your colours and white for the background which will construct your site. This is helpful because it is hard to visualise a site with just the colours, this tool puts the colours together so an idea of what the site will look like is given.

    Colour List

The last section is the colour list, which shows the hex codes of the colours you have selected, so you can put them easily onto your site or into Photoshop to add to your current bespoke web design project.

    Conclusion

Selecting right colour scheme is vital when designing a website, but getting it perfect can prove to be difficult. By using the colour scheme designer tool, you can see what your site will look like when you have selected your settings and experimented with the colour wheel to find what is right for you.

    Cutting An Image In Photoshop

    Monday, December 5th, 2011

If you would like to cut out part of an image to use in another image or just to change the back ground of it, then all you will need to is use the polygonal lasso tool. To select this tool, right click the lasso tool and select the polygonal option.

The higher the resolution of your image, the more accurate your cut out will be because you will need to select close to the edges, if you are just using this to take the image out and use elsewhere, then do not worry too much about the neatness of the cut out, make sure it follows the same shape as what you want to be cut out.

    Tip

When cutting out the shape, try and select the pixels that are in between the image you want and the background. It is better to go closer to the image you want instead of the background when cutting out areas.

    Conclusion

The Polygonal lasso tool is very simple to use and really just takes practice to get perfect. It is an essential factor in web design and one of the most commonly used tools on photoshop.
